Heraklion Airport, officially known as the Heraklion Nikos Kazantzakis International Airport, is Crete’s main gateway to the world. The airport is named after Heraklion native Nikos Kazantzakis, a Greek writer and philosopher. It is one of the largest airports in Greece. It is also the second-busiest airport in the country, after Athens International Airport, servicing millions of tourists to Crete, especially in the summer months. It is located about 5 kilometers from the main city of Heraklion. Aside from its close proximity to the city of Heraklion, the airport has a very accessible location that makes it easy for visitors going to and coming from other parts of Crete to pass through. Heraklion Airport serves as a hub for Olympic Airways, Sky Express and Aegean Airways. In addition to the three airlines mentioned above, Heraklion Airport also services domestic flights to and from the other Greek islands, such as Santorini, Rhodes, Mykonos and Paros. The airport is also connected to the major airports on Athens and Thessaloniki. Charter flights come mostly from Romania, Italy, Germany, Russia and the United Kingdom. To the west the road leads you to Heraklion and to the east the road connects to the motorway which runs along the north coast of Crete and connects to the most important tourist places. Car Rental is of course available at Heraklion Airport for travelers who want to rent a car for road trips around Crete. Five million passengers use the airport every year. The terminal building is fairly small and therefore is extremely busy on the peak days in the busy season. A new airport is being built not far from the current airport, but it will still take years before the first flights depart and arrive. Heraklion Airport has a limited offering of shops and restaurants. There is one restaurant and five cafes. The car park is located near the terminal building and has parking spaces for 500 cars.
